Maserati
It’s refreshing that Maserati’s instrumental rock always seems to be sprinting toward something, even—no, especially—when the goal seems maddeningly huge and distant. The Athens band’s glimmering guitar parts are free of pompous fluff, serving an obsessive sense of rhythm as much as the pointed, indefatigable drumming of its prolific percussionist, the late Jerry Fuchs. Fuchs died before the completion of 2010’s Pyramid Of The Sun, but at least it does him proud. This latest album dispenses with what little tendency the band had before to wander. At its best, it thrives on a tight interlock that some will mistake for “danceable,” but has a lot more to do with determined, mirage-inducing repetition.
