Mat Kearney
What happens to the part-folk-pop, part-kinda-rap music that Mat Kearney pioneered when it’s ready to grow up a little more? Well, judging from Kearney’s 2009 album, City Of Black & White, it could be time to forge ahead into full-on adult-contemporary. But if you go by his 2011 release, Young Love, which thankfully rights the trajectory of building Kearney’s rap-folk-pop ship into a much sturdier vessel. He muscles up on some Jason Mraz, hip-hop-influenced swagger on “Ships In The Night”; cranks up some Todd Rundgren-esque stadium pop on “Young Dumb And In Love”; and gets seriously infectious with handclaps, fuzzy guitars, and big choruses on “Hey Mama.” It’s a soundtrack for a purgatorial 30s, but it feels like such a pleasant place to be.
