A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Matt And Kim

  • Matt & Kim

Grand, Matt & Kim’s second album, is named after Grand Street in Williamsburg—not coincidentally the spastic pop duo’s place of residence. It’s a rapidly changing thoroughfare, with new galleries and upscale restaurants supplanting old bodegas, and in its way, it’s a pretty good metaphor for Matt & Kim. Their self-titled 2006 debut was fun but trite, all bubblegum and repetition. But just as the neighborhood has evolved, so too have Matt & Kim: Grand dramatically improves the band’s songcraft but keeps the catchiness, with earworms that burrow deep and won’t escape for months.
