He’s managed to draw some attention outside the city limits, but Matt Bearden is a downright comic institution in his hometown of Austin. He’s a nearly ubiquitous presence in local stand-up circles, with a regular showcase at Cap City (the weekly Punch!), standing emcee gigs with events like Fashion Freakout and the Misprint Beard And Mustache Contest, and a day job as the snarking sidekick on KLBJ’s Dudley And Bob Show. As a solo performer, Bearden is a master of the comedic feint, lacing his sardonic sensibility through bits that start going one way (say, a story about romancing an younger woman) before veering into unpredictable, hilarious, and painful (a romantic evening with that woman that leads to a dislocated shoulder) conclusions.
