Artist Matthew And The Arrogant Sea

With its mix of brass-band instrumentation and electronic trickery, Matthew And The Arrogant Sea’s debut full-length, Family Family Family Meets The Magic Christian, slotted nicely alongside the psych-folk experiments of Animal Collective, but—aside from occasionally tripping on some “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” lyricism—it was far more winsome than weird. Having shuffled its lineup since that debut release, the band now strikes a more fully organic, guitar-based pose, with space-rock flourishes well-suited to Matthew Gray’s apparent affection for the final frontier. The band is playing shows ahead of its next release, the Up With The Owl EP; expect plenty of campfire harmonies and more than a few mind-droppings that would make Wayne Coyne jealous.
