Pint-sized axe-shredder Mayda has been a constant presence on the Twin Cities scene the past few years. The South Korean adoptee manages to channel funk (i.e. Prince) and sneering rock (i.e. Joan Jett), mixing those parts to create a high-energy, uniquely danceable whole. Still in her 20s, Mayda is celebrating the release of her sophomore LP Tusks In Furs tonight. The album features players from Twin Cities notables like Prince’s New Power Generation, Mason Jennings, and Johnny Lang. Her new tunes are already getting play on TV (MTV’s Jersey Shore, Showtime’s The Real L Word), so expect big things once Tusks officially drops.
