Like a fine wine, Melvins only get better with age: The sludge sweetens, the riffage gets blacker, and King Buzzo’s hair gets more frightening. In the ’80s, the Northwestern legends were a favorite of Kurt Cobain, and when Nirvana blew up, Melvins, too, found themselves on a major label. Atlantic dropped the band after three records, but the endorsement of another legend picked things up again: Since signing to Mike Patton’s eclectic Ipecac label, the Melvins have enjoyed a resurgence.
