A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Mike Doughty

Mike Doughty is a veteran alt-rocker whose work with Soul Coughing in the late '90s gave way to a major-label deal, a heroin addiction (that he later kicked), a subsequent major-label body slam, and eventually a flourishing career under his own name. As a solo player, Doughty makes upbeat folk that’s occasionally cloying—he growls, sing-talks, and sometimes busts out the hand drums—but more often is redemptive and winning. The Brooklyn-based Doughty plays here behind his newest album,Happy Man, Sad Man, which peddles yet more tunes about hopelessness giving way to something just a little bit better.
