While he’s not yet on the level of the friends from TV On The Radio and Grizzly Bear who help with his albums, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson shares their taste for combining cryptic explorations with emotional directness. While that catharsis was mostly sensed among the empty spaces hiding in the shambolic, wounded folk of Robinson’s self-titled debut, it reaches its apex on his 2009 debut for Saddle Creek, Summer Of Fear. Backed by portentous layers of horns, strings, and keyboards from TVOTR’s Kyp Malone, Robinson fearlessly lays out a blackly comic story of addiction and redemption over the sort of chugging Americana popularized by Tom Petty, finally reaping the whirlwind in the 11-minute, love-gone-wrong epic, “More Than A Mess.”
