Artist Miss May I

  • Miss May I

The most common criticism levied at metalcore, even from fervent fans, is that it’s too formulaic—a by-numbers mix of guttural thrash, vocals that go from soaring emo tremble to raspy scream to super-scary demon in the same verse, and way too many breakdowns. Ohio’s Miss May I is on Rise Records, home to most of those generically aggro bands—and judging by its two full-length releases, 2009’s Apologies Are For The Weak and this year’s Monument, Miss May I is content with merely being part of the pack. Double-bass blast beats, down-tuned chugging, and throat-rending growls dominate every song with nary a sonic left turn.
