Modern Skirts
A miniature rainbow rush of a band, Modern Skirts emerged from their Athens, Ga., hometown well-versed in many pop voices, from Ben Folds’ to Carl Newman’s. That makes it hard to pick out the band’s own voice on records like last year’s All Of Us In Our Night, but it’s also hard to discount Modern Skirts’ likeable pluck. As it cycles through a variety of piano- and guitar-driven hooks, it stays in command with a charm that’s not too mopey and not too sugarcoated. The band has certainly won over Mike Mills of Athens music scene godfathers R.E.M., who appears on All Of Us and has cited the Skirts as his favorite local band.
