Mogwai
Glasgow outfit Mogwai could easily be pegged as a band that takes itself far too seriously. Its songs—some of which can take more than five minutes to build to any sort of head-bobbing tempo—have no lyrics, and there’s certainly no shortage of ethereal guitar noodling. But Mogwai keeps listeners on their toes, powering through a mixed bag of tempos, layering instruments in a steady climb, and then slapping goofball titles on songs, like “The Sun Smells Too Loud” and “I’m Jim Morrison, I’m Dead.” This year, the group released the Earth Division EP, and its seventh full-length, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, both a continuation of its well-worn atmospheric and cinematic sound.
