A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Mogwai

Glasgow outfit Mogwai could easily be pegged as a band that takes itself far too seriously. Its songs—some of which can take more than five minutes to build to any sort head-bobbing tempo—have no lyrics, and there’s certainly no shortage of ethereal guitar noodling. But Mogwai keeps listeners on their toes, powering through a mixed bag of tempos, layering instruments in a steady climb, and then slapping goofball titles on songs, like “The Sun Smells Too Loud” and “I’m Jim Morrison, I’m Dead.” In 2008, the group released its sixth full-length, The Hawk Is Howling, a continuation of its well-worn atmospheric and cinematic sound.
