Mother Banjo
Folk songstress Ellen Stanley (a.k.a. Mother Banjo) is a self-proclaimed “one-woman band.” Although it seems more like she’s more of a female vocalist-banjo player than a real band per se, her warm voice and rootsy traditional approach make her a nice slice of Americana, all petty semantics aside. An avid pupil of public-radio folk recordings and coffeehouse buskers growing up, she gleaned what she could from acoustic artists, bluegrass bands, and roots musicians. She married this to her own poetic sensibilities, making for a nice mix of traditional and contemporary folk with just a little twang. However, with her tracks featuring collaborators ending up as some of the strongest she has, one wonders what Mother Banjo will sounds like with the help of a multi-person band behind her.
