Mothfight takes a different route to the psychedelic rager still kicking at the center of Austin’s music scene: Through glitchy layers of looped classical instruments, spoken-word samples, and circuit-bent electronics, Kevin Attics and his band arrive at the blissful space between experimental noise and the campfire yelp-alongs of Sung Tongs-era Animal Collective. Like Attics’ former band The Octopus Project, Mothfight’s flair for the visual can be difficult to get past (but that’s what you get when you wear your "steampunk optometrist" costume to the photo shoot), but the kitchen-sink A-side of the band’s Natrix Natrix 7-inch, “Hopscotch,” is beholden to no particular historical period, excessive use of singing saw or no.
