Frank Capra’s 1936 romantic comedy Mr. Deeds Goes To Town hails the values of simple, small-town folk, but without the sticky morality that plagues some of his other work. The irresistible Gary Cooper stars as the title character, an earnest bumpkin from Mandrake Falls, Vt., who comes to New York after learning that a distant relative left him a $20 million fortune. Once there, Cooper fends off con men and greedy opportunists from all corners, including hotshot reporter Jean Arthur, who tries to snare his sympathies by posing as a damsel in distress.
