Atmosphere and the Rhymesayers crew cast a long shadow in the Twin Cities hip-hop scene, but the backpacker indie-rap sound isn’t all it has. It looks like a pretty sure bet that the next big thing in local rap is Brooklyn Park’s Muja Messiah, who goes for the throat on harder-edged material than Minneapolis is generally known for—both unflinching inner-city postcards and perceptive political material like “Patriot Act.” He’s also smart, funny, and has a knack for letting his personality shine through his material, so it’s no wonder his new mix-tape, M-16’s (a follow-up to 2008’s terrific Thee Adventures Of A B-Boy/D-Boy LP), conveys life on the streets of Minneapolis with lines like “You know how we do / Yep, yep, you betcha / Bill collectors tryin’ to do me like Denny Hecker.”
