Artist Mutemath

  • Mutemath Claire Vogel

Mutemath is a more restless band than the windy hooks of its 2007 single “Typical” might suggest. Sure, at times the band can sound like another polished bunch of young U2 worshippers; but then again, its self-titled 2006 debut album explored a few wiggy, ambient synth and vocal sounds on Warner Brothers' dime. 2009’s follow-up, Armistice, expands on that admirable quality, alternately building catchy songs from dissonant elements and searching for another bombastic hit. The band’s latest, Odd Soul, echoes countless bigger acts: The title track is pure Black Keys muscle, while “All Or Nothing” may as well be a cover of Coldplay covering Radiohead. Mutemath’s still not the most distinctive thing out there, but the band’s healthy curiosity counts for something.
