Nana Grizol
Carrying on in the grand tradition of the Elephant 6 Recording Company, Athens, Ga.'s Nana Grizol takes a kitchen-sink approach to songwriting, marrying the simple melodies of frontman Theo Hilton to loose folk-punk arrangements brimming with handclaps, chattering percussion, and horns that sound like they wandered over from a ska-themed homecoming parade. The band's full-length debut, Love It Love It, veers occasionally into twee territories (its cover presents potential tourmates for the animal band depicted on The Boy Least Likely To's The Best Party Ever), but its upcoming follow-up, Ruth, as well as the band's live show, bring out a fury that was only hinted at by the most frantic ofLove It's tracks. It's a wholly organic counterpoint to the glitchy Casiotones that shield fellow Athens outlier Geoff Reacher's country heart.
