Artist Nellie Wilson And The Hellbound Honeys

Mixing down-tempo country-western with tales of sex, violence, and humor, Nellie Wilson And The Hellbound Honeys ride a slightly contrived concept to success on the strength of Wilson’s beautiful voice. Hearing her describe her prowess with a butterfly knife to man who’s looking to get stuck if he doesn’t quit messing around on “Up, Down, Repeatedly,” or clearly calling out the chorus on someone-done-me-wrong anthem “The Cunt Of My Dreams,” gains humor from the conflicting innocence in her porcelain vocals. But without her backing band, which really gets to cut it loose on “Jose Cuervo,” surely the new album (that the band celebrates here) wouldn’t be half as enjoyable.
