Neon Trees

Who knew Utah was America’s salty new hotbed for dance rock? New-new-wave outfit Neon Trees were local favorites in Provo until The Killers brought them on a nationwide tour. The pairing was logical; Neon Trees emit the same shimmering, synth-heavy flash that The Killers have brought to the mainstream. Unfortunately, Neon Trees frontman Tyler Glenn has none of the forced absurdity that makes Brandon Flowers so captivating to watch, and the band lacks the vitality of The Killers’ rhythm section, only churning out polished but predictable synthpop. Neon Trees are still finding their footing, though, and hopefully will continue to take eyeliner-wearing and songwriting cues from their mentors. 2011 saw them touring with My Chemical Romance and having their single “Animal” performed on Glee. The band’s new album, Picture Show, received middling reviews but mostly enthusiastic responses from fans.
