Under their performative guise as N.E.R.D., rock-rappers Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams court hip-hop-shy crowds while not entirely digressing from the platinum beats and dirty synths of their real money-maker, the production work they do as The Neptunes. N.E.R.D.’s sound has been weird (and occasionally really bad) since the beginning, but it also wanders into some surprisingly fruitful territory. The last N.E.R.D. album was last year's typically uneven but rewarding Seeing Sounds.
