Artist Nicole Atkins And The Black Sea

  • Nicole Atkins Jennifer Tzar

In 2007, Nicole Atkins was a rising star, with a much-hyped major-label debut on the way. But despite strong reviews, Neptune City stiffed, and during the long march to her second album, a live-in relationship went down in flames as well. Those may not have been the happiest years of Atkins’ life, but she’s emerged stronger and wiser, funding her tours through Kickstarter rather than waiting on music-biz payouts. This year’s Mondo Amore wastes no time swinging for the fences, as Atkins throws her sultry warble into large-scale arrangements that draw on torch-song sorrow and roadhouse rock. If living well is the best revenge, she’s well on her way to getting even.
