Nitzer Ebb
Industrial pioneers Nitzer Ebb never broke through to mainstream success, but their punk- and goth-influenced techno left an undeniable imprint on ’90s electronic and heavy metal music. Formed in Essex, England as an entirely electronic project utilizing keyboards, synthesizers, and electronic drums, Nitzer Ebb’s early output was aggressive and hard-edged. After a tour with Depeche Mode in the late ’80s, singer Douglas McCarthy and drummer Bon Harris began integrating pop-influenced songs into their dark-but-danceable sound. The resulting albums, That Total Age and Ebbhead, were successful among alternative music fans and college radio DJs, but the band quietly faded into obscurity. The band reunited in 2006, and released its first new studio record, Industrial Complex, earlier this year.
