No Joy

No Joy

The prospect of yet another band submerging itself in shoegaze-inspired fizz should be dull by now. No Joy at least gets a bit more mileage out of it on 2010’s Ghost Blonde, because Jasmine White-Glutz and Laura Lloyd follow through on the noise with both snuggly vocal melodies and cheerful ear-needles of feedback. It’s harder to dismiss when they muster up some real punch, channeling a little Kim Gordon and a solid rhythm section on “Hawaii,” “Ghost Blonde,” and “Still.” It may be part cotton candy with extra reverb, but don’t be surprised if No Joy gets harder and heftier onstage.
