Artist Ohbijou

On the spectrum of lushly orchestrated Canadian acts with prominent female vocals, Ohbijou falls closer to Arcade Fire than Stars. Frontwoman Casey Mecija may have picked up some pointers from Stars’ Amy Milan on sheltering smoldering passion in hushed vocals, but the instrumentation of Ohbijou’s debut disc, Swift Feet For Troubling Times, is covered in Funeral’s indelible fingerprints. More muted than either of these easy reference points, wintry songs like “Anabacus” evoke slowly falling flakes of snow—the perfect antidote to sweating your ass off in the Texas heat. The band plays here ahead of next month’s sophomore release, Beacons.
