A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Old 97's

  • Lisa Johnson

For most of the past 16 years, the Old 97’s have escaped easy classification by churning out album after album of bouncy power pop coated with a patina of alt-country rootsiness. The listenable formula works, and 2008’s Blame It On Gravity is a testament to this consistency: It’s enjoyable top-to-bottom, even though it breaks little, if any, new ground. The Texas-based quartet may not be reinventing itself in the studio, but it can always be counted on to deliver punchy shows loaded with clever and wry lyrical turns.
