You can excuse Chris Crisci for taking three and a half years to complete the follow-up to Old Canes’ debut, Early Morning Hymns—the dude had a baby to take care of and another band (atmospheric emo favorites The Appleseed Cast) to put back together. Of course, the newly released Feral Harmonicsounds like it was much longer in the making; its wild and wooly folk songs bear out the sort of sepia-toned vision of Crisci’s Kansas home that only truly exists in old folk songs. Having built most of the record’s tracks from the rhythms up, there’s a propulsion toFeral Harmonic (a restless longing for the heights where Crisci’s better-known band exists?), matched by fevered playing that’s likely to become even more fevered live.
