Or, The Whale has lofty ambitions, throwing roots-rock, vintage country, and indie pop together in a sepia-toned pastiche of Americana tradition—a combination that has already worked wonders for Fleet Foxes. The San Francisco seven-piece’s 2007 debut, Light Poles And Pines, soared on harmony and heart-on-sleeve songwriting while staying planted in the rich soil of traditional folk. It’s 2009 self-titled follow-up picks up where the debut left off with catchy alt-country ballads and surprisingly edgy rock, all drizzled in the molasses-sugared folk at the heart of Or, The Whale’s clean, if somewhat familiar, sound.
