Artist Painted Saints

Paul Fonfara spent many years as a multi-instrumentalist for DeVotchka, but his new endeavors eventually ended up as the material for Minneapolis band Painted Saints. Fonfara and an expansive supporting cast incorporate large threads of post-rock, Klezmer, and spaghetti-Western scores into gloomy, slowly built webs like contemporaries The Black Heart Procession and Explosions In The Sky. Low-hanging strings and mournful horns populate dirges like “In Remembrance Of The Pottersfield Special” and the appropriately named “Lights Hanging Low From Heavy Cottonwoods” off of 2007’s The Bricks Might Breathe Again. But even if sorrow sounds like the dominant theme, the swirling arrangements never feel too heavy. The band just released its brand-new album, No Match For Greater Minds.
