Pattern Is Movement

Pattern is Movement

Raised in strict Pentecostal households and originally bonding over Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, the members of Pattern Is Movement—unsurprisingly—approach indie rock from an odd perspective. But nothing quite prepares listeners for the group’s 2008 full-length, All Together. Lilting, spacious, and dreamlike, the disc shows just how far singer-keyboardist Andrew Thiboldeaux and drummer Chris Ward have come since the math-rock knottiness of their 2004 debut, The (Im)possibility Of Longing. Now free of guitar and, it would seem, any notions of conventional logic, the duo has penned a set of haunting, orchestral songs that were inspired by a bundle of antique photos found in its native Philadelphia.
