As a club DJ, Pete Tong has never quite managed to break into the top tier of name-brand acts like Sasha or Tiesto, despite a storied career that’s seen him play on stages around the world for decades. Despite not carrying the kind of marquee appeal of some of his contemporaries, Tong is arguably the world’s most influential dance music tastemaker, thanks to his long-running and hugely popular Essential Mix and Essential Selection radio shows, which have served to anoint a mind-boggling selection of top tracks and acts. Given those shows’ successes under his supervision, it’s safe to say Tong knows a thing or two about what makes for great dance music.
