Self-pegged purveyors of “deep space doom funk,” Phantom Tails trade in rock excess. Frontman Orion Treon looks like a heroin-added Britpopper, and top hat-clad keyboardist Sergio Hernandezsummons a portlier Slash. The shows are absolute washes of sweat and smoke machines. Sonically, these music-scene vets are true to their concocted genre. An array of throbbing, vintage keys hint at something otherworldly, and the guitars slam with industrial fervor. Oh, and whale songs were liberally sampled on last year’s solid LP, Sounds Of The Hunchback Whale. Does that messy recipe work? It does, as Phantom Tails’ up-tempo offerings default as decidedly danceable nuggets of dark pop: Think ’70s classic rock shrouded in a haze of swirling electronics. The band had a banner winter to begin 2011, with finalist appearances in both First Avenue’s and Vita.mn’s “Best New Band” celebrations.
