Psalm One
The only bummer about Chicago rapper Psalm One is waiting for a full-length follow-up to 2006’s great debut for Rhymesayers, The Death Of Frequent Flyer. Fans shouldn’t have to wait too long, considering she’s released a trio of stopgaps titled Woman At Work and has been working hard on a follow-up, allegedly due out soon. Everything else about her work to this point has been exciting, especially her cunning rhyme skills: She’s equally funny, cocky, and frank about growing up as a “chubby girl” in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood and balancing music with her post-college day job working as a chemist. Her latest single, “Regular Black Girl,” combines some of Chicago’s best tripped-out beats with a whole lot of “you don’t know me” attitude, resulting in a track that could bring down the house in all sorts of venues.
