Pterodactyl’s drums and guitar clatter up brightly noisy songs that may sound like flailing gibberish at first, but the really strange thing is how well the band pulls it together into something coherent. All three members sing, sometimes in freaky harmonies and sometimes in a round, making for lots of hypnotically repetitive melodies on top of the Brooklyn trio’s spastic and unpolished math-rock. With its stiff, strained vocals and generally noisy approach, you’d think it would be asking for a pretentious mess, but Pterodactyl is tight enough to harness all this chaos to its advantage with heart-charging exuberance. The band just released its brand-new third LP, Spills Out.
