Listening to the breathy, bare acoustic songs of singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata’s latest album, Chesapeake, it’s hard to imagine she was at one time the lead singer of a funk-fusion band named Bumpus. It’s easier to see why her solo work over the past seven years has slotted so well into the emotionally fraught moments of TV shows like ER,One Tree Hill, and The O.C., on which Yamagata also made a guest appearance. She also loves collaborations, working with everyone from Jason Mraz and Toots & The Maytals to the Muppets. Her more grown-up-sounding new album stretches her sound into the confident soulfulness of Cat Power.
