Ray Manzarek
People fall into three groups: those who love The Doors, those who hate The Doors, and those who don’t know what The Doors are. For the latter group: The Doors were the L.A. psych-rock band active from 1964-1971 and are responsible for songs like “Light My Fire” and “People Are Strange.” Beef normally comes up over late frontman Jim “The Lizard King” Morrison, whose drunken-druggin’ antics and stoned-high-schooler-with-a-Dionysus-complex lyrics make some cringe and others ecstatic. No matter which side of this debate you take, please don’t blame keyboardist and Doors co-founder Ray Manzarek. His blues band, co-led by guitarist Roy Rogers, plays tonight—and the last thing the band wants to hear mid-tune is you bickering over whether Morrison really died or is just hiding in Africa under the name Chief Mojo Rising.
