From its extensive bio detailing "the bloody aftermath of a 75-mph highway crash" and inspiration derived from Dante’s Inferno—both of which “accelerated the band’s emotional core”—Red comes across as an unusually positive metal band. But it’s not until the last line (“Hell won’t know what hit it”) that the source of its upbeat outlook becomes clear: Red is a Christian band, and the angelically soaring vocals and tinny orchestral flourishes layered over stock crunchy riffage on last year’s Innocence & Instinct provide even more proof of the inevitable softness that comes from devoting a life of service to a higher power. But tucked into a genre known for backing up bold proclamations of faith with puny musical muscles, Red is practically GWAR.
