Popular music blog Hipster Runoff routinely skewers the ubiquity of “fuzzy buzzy lo-fi” bands, but some groups do that sound right. Minneapolis’ own Red Pens is one of those groups. The duo trades in guitar squalls, distortion, and reverb. It’s not all arbitrary noise, though, as there’s an underlying artfulness to the arrangements. The group has released just one LP—2010’s Reasons—but the Pens have already solidified their status atop the scene heap. Need proof? The group was recently chosen to open for a troupe of local legends, the reunited Golden Smog.
