Ringo Deathstarr
If you’re going to invoke the backbeat of the world’s most popular band and a space station large enough to be mistaken for a moon, you better sound fucking huge. Luckily for Anglophilic Austin quartet Ringo Deathstarr, the sheer heft of the recently released Colour Trip could destroy Alderaan and Pepperland. Not that the album is a heavy slog—stuffed with fuzzy ’90s guitars, poppy songwriting, and gooey boy-girl vocals, it’s positively adorable. A reference to “bubblegum and Ecstasy” in the standout “So High” sums up Ringo Deathstarr’s sensibilities nicely, and the band is best heard live, loud, and loaded.
