Riverboat Gamblers
Where Riverboat Gamblers go, great expectations follow—for pop-punk that’s brawny and brainy, for huge, hoist-your-Lone Star hooks, and for a live show as explosively unhinged as the band’s big audio dynamite is powderkeg-tight. Of course, no one expected the group to spend the latter half of 2009 awaiting the recovery of sidelined guitarist Ian McDougall (whose bike accident was the kicker to a particularly perilous 2009 for the Austin music community) rather than reaping the crossover rewards of its infectious Underneath The Owl. But another thing you can always expect from the Gamblers is that they’ll bounce back from any hand they’re dealt. These days, that means both “hit me”—see Mike Wiebe’s stranger-trolling on the video of “The Ol’ Smash And Grab” off this year’sSmash/Grab EP—and “stay,” spending the past few months in the studio working on a new album, due out sometime in 2012.
