New York-born comic Robert Schimmel specializes in confrontational, profane material about sex, scatology, parenthood, and conflict. That’s nothing new, of course, but Schimmel’s candid, honest self-deprecation generally keeps his act from getting too redundant or obnoxious. Unabashed and often abrasive, Schimmel has no qualms about incorporating his personal life into his routine—whether talking about losing pubic hair during chemo or flirting with a worker at the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Even so, he encourages audience members to bring CDs and audiobooks to shows for donation to cancer-treatment centers, citing his own experience listening to comedy albums by Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and Bill Cosby as aiding his recovery from the disease in 2000.
