Rocky Votolato began his career in power-pop band Waxwing, but he has since moved on to much quieter singer-songwriter fare built around his voice and (usually) an acoustic guitar. His first stretch into solo territory happened to coincide with the great Dashboard Confessional avalanche of the early 2000s, and though Votolato could have easily been buried with it, he has managed to forge ahead nearly unscathed. His music has only grown fuller with time: Rather than the stripped-down starkness heard on previous works, 2010’s True Devotion is an even more concerted effort, replete with backup vocals and catchy, lo-fi beats. For his latest, 2012’s Television Of Saints, Votolato ditched a label and set out to raise funds via a Kickstarter campaign. So enjoy it. You paid for it!
