Like algae inside a fish tank, college towns inevitably grow new jam bands, ready to cycle through musical influences faster than a sophomore changes majors. While it’s true that the Minneapolis scene that spawned noodling dudes Roster McCabe extends well beyond its mighty university, that particular niche is responsible for the meandering-but-never-unpleasant sounds the band makes. Syphoning off healthy chunks of reggae, funk, and Grateful Dead-style guitar wandering—even adding a touch of Weather Channel smooth jazz—Roster McCabe invites all sorts of funky party people into extended jams, like “The Traveler” off its 2007 debut, The Rhythm/The Elements. The album Through Space & Time came out in December 2010, and the band released the live collection Live At The Cabooze Vol. II in 2011.
