HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist Sanctified Grumblers

Rising from the ashes of Devil In A Woodpile, Sanctified Grumblers play old-timey jug-band music with a focus on live performance: Their Myspace lists their record label as “come hear us live, people.” Their setup draws Dixieland band influence—the jug has been replaced by a sousaphone, a brass instrument in the tuba family—which allows for a bit of innovation and visual flair in the normally by-the-book jug-band revivalist trend. They manage to defy the lazy stereotypes that come to mind when people imagine a traditional roots band (a couple of unwashed hicks in overalls sitting on a broken-down porch); the Grumblers deftly pay tribute to the music found on antique 78s. They’ve scored an open-ended run of intimate, unamplified sets every Tuesday at The Hideout and play regularly throughout Chicagoland.
