Though he’s wisely stripped away the “To Your Mom” part of his musical moniker, Say Hi’s Eric Elbogen continues to make the quintessential indie pop that he began self-releasing with 2002’sDiscosadness. For 2009’s Oohs & Aahs, Elbogen finally hooked up with a proper label, Barsuk, which got his clever little pop nuggets to an even wider audience of Saucony-wearing Built To Spill fans. Say Hi’s latest record, the coyly titled Um, Uh Oh, hit stores early this year and is much, much darker than anything prior. On tracks like “Devils,” Elbogen growls and slinks, Morphine-style, through a world of regret and second guesses. Those last few years must have been doozies if this is where Elbogen’s head’s at now.
