Artist Shapes Have Fangs

  • Shapes Have Fangs Sandy Carson

Handpicked by the late Sky Saxon as his last group of ersatz Seeds, Austin’s Shapes Have Fangs established its psychedelic bona fides early, moving to the fore of the Nuggets-indebted Red River class of ’08. But the band didn’t get signed by Matador (like Harlem), nor did it become the darling of other cities’ DIY scenes (like The Strange Boys or Woven Bones), so much of the noise generated by the band’s twisted shout eventually subsided. Its only recently begun to recapture that momentum, thanks in large part to the swinging rhythms and mescaline blues of the new Dinner In The Dark. The album confirms what Saxon heard upon arriving in Austin: Nobody in town does snarling psych-jangle better than Shapes Have Fangs.
