This Week Ted Leo And The Pharmacists cover Tears For Fears

Artist Shemekia Copeland

  • shemekia copeland Joseph A. Rosen
Shemekia Copeland has been on the road since the age of 19, belting the blues with a powerhouse voice and stage presence that recalls legends like Denise LaSalle and Bettye LaVette. Having just finished up her 20s, she’s already collaborated with the likes of Steve Cropper and Dr. John (to name a couple) over the course of five albums. Her 2009 release, Never Going Back, balances feisty, steamy soul influences with production that’s big and shiny but not overly slick. From the film-noir funk of “Never Going Back To Memphis” to the bright gospel of “Sounds Like The Devil,” the album gives Copeland a diverse backdrop, letting her voice decisively carry a fun, mature set of songs.
