Artist Shpongle

You don’t have to be familiar with the effects of psychedelic drugs to appreciate the warped music of Simon Posford’s Shpongle project, but it sure helps. The act creates deep, multidimensional soundscapes that are weirder, wilder, and infinitely more compelling than most of its psy-trance contemporaries, and delves into deep, pulsating, and gorgeously trippy takes on downtempo. The Shpongle experience has produced four albums full of twisty, brain-bending beats and alien soundscapes—2009’s Ineffable Mysteries From Shpongleland is the latest full-length, though Internet sources say another is in the works. EP God Particle was released in 2010—and a multimedia-rich live show that has incorporated everything from live dancers to an 18-foot, four-level, audio-visual battle station dubbed the Shpongletron. It may be an acquired taste, but once you’ve been Shpongled, you’ll never be the same.
