Artist Shrinebuilder

  • Julie Patterson

Doom-metal supergroup—yes, one exists—Shrinebuilder explores the pounding, rhythmic hard rock on which the genre is founded. With both Neurosis’ Scott Kelly and Scott “Wino” Weinrich (The Obsessed, The Hidden Hand) sharing guitar and vocals, Al Cisneros (Om, Sleep) playing trance-like bass, and Melvins’ Dale Crover setting the beat with earth-shattering drums, this is one ensemble that’s best left to its own exploratory devices. A union of egos on this level might have easily dissolved into unproductive conflict, but Shrinebuilder’s members instead drive one another to mine the depths of drifting distortions and underground heavy metal. The band’s recently released self-titled album features five tracks that were recorded over a mere three-day period—a promising beginning for what will hopefully be a long collaboration.
