Six Organs Of Admittance
Ex-Comets On Fire member Ben Chasny’s solo project is the spiritual successor to what guitar legend John Fahey described as “American Primitivism”—intricate acoustic guitar pieces, ingrained with the ghosts of traditional folk songs and combined with the experimental nature of free jazz, psychedelia, and modern classical. The present movement has been called many things (freak-folk, New Weird America, etc.) with Chasny, Devendra Banhart and the late Jack Rose at its forefront. Beginning in 1998, Six Organs Of Admittance have put out almost two dozen releases, many in limited-edition quantities that are long out of print. The latest Drag City full-length, this year’s Asleep On The Floodplain, is a moody ride with beautiful guitar and vocal harmonies being crashed upon with tense waves of horns, harmoniums, and synths, all played by Chasny.
